Pierce County nurses reached a tentative agreement early Thursday with their hospital hours after voting to go on strike for better workplace conditions.

The Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) and MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup confirmed the agreement around noon on Thursday. Nurses at the hospital voted 95% in favor of the strike late Wednesday night.

"We are pleased that we have reached a tentative agreement with WSNA," Good Samaritan Hospital said in a statement. "The agreement still needs to be ratified and we look forward to completing the process."

Nurses at the hospital asked for longer breaks and meal times and better nurse-to-patient ratios.

"After 20 hours of bargaining, the nurses at Good Sam reached a tentative agreement around 4:30 a.m.," the WSNA said in an email to KOMO News. "They are thrilled. They will be getting 12%-24% raises, ratification bonuses of $3,500, dedicated break nurses, a charge nurse and flex nurse for each unit, and they will be getting staffing plans as part of their contract."

Jared Richardson, a registered nurse and co-chair of the WSNA bargaining team at the hospital, said in the email he was "thrilled" with the "historic and amazing contract."

Richardson said the contract will help retain nurses and attract new nurses.

"We really wanted Good Sam to be a place where nurses can feel part of the community," Richardson said.
